PACD Research Club

Glaucoma is the world’s leading cause of irreversible blindness, with primary angle-closure glaucoma being particularly prevalent among Asian populations, posing a serious threat to the visual function and quality of life of patients in China. Despite ongoing advancements in related research, challenges remain in understanding its pathogenesis, achieving early detection, enabling precise diagnosis, and standardizing prevention and treatment. To further promote academic exchange and collaborative innovation in the field of primary angle-closure glaucoma, a non-profit collaborative research network—the Primary Angle-Closure Disease (PACD) Research Club—has been formally established. This initiative is led by Academician Wang Ningli of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Li Shuning’s team from Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University, and Professor Ying Han from the University of California, San Francisco.

01 Statement

PACD Research Club is a non-profit collaborative initiative voluntarily established by ophthalmic professionals, comprising clinicians, lab researchers, and public health scholars dedicated to primary angle-closure disease (PACD)/ spectrum of primary angle-closure (sPAC). The organization is committed to:

  • Building a research and exchange platform for PACD/sPAC;
  • Establishing evidence-based diagnostic and treatment guidelines for PACD/sPAC in Chinese populations;
  • Advancing innovations in early screening and personalized treatment strategies;
  • Promoting domestic and international academic collaboration, as well as public education on PACD/sPAC.

02 Action plan

  • Multicenter Research Platform: Facilitate nationwide collaboration to establish a unified clinical database for PACD/sPAC.
  • Shallow Anterior Chamber Cohort Study
  • AI-Driven Predictive Modeling: Develop deep learning-based models to predict: Angle closure progression, Glaucomatous optic nerve damage.
  • Community-based Blindness Prevention: Implement nationwide screening programs for early detection of PACG in rural areas.
